ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Suspects trying to get away from an armed robbery at a Family Dollar store, crashed while St. Petersburg Police were in pursuit.
A customer in the store called police, and reported two suspects were robbing the clerk, and one had fired a gun.
A witness provided a description of the suspect's vehicle and officers began searching the area for it.
Minutes later, officers spotted the suspect vehicle, and attempted a traffic stop.
The vehicle sped away, and a supervisor authorized a pursuit.
Moments later, the suspect vehicle crashed into a tree at 15th Avenue South and 40th Street South.
Investigators said 19-year-old Dijon Jackson, of Pittsburg, Pa., died at the scene. She was a passenger in the car.
The driver was identified as 31-year-old Alfonso Mackey of St. Petersburg. He was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries.
Officers recovered a firearm inside Mackey's vehicle that matched the gun used in the armed robbery at the Family Dollar store.
Mackey will be charged with armed robbery, fleeing and eluding and other charges related to Jackson's death, after he is released from the hospital.
Mackey was released from prison in October, 2012, after serving a ten year sentence for car-jacking.
