St. Petersburg, Fla. - Downtown St. Petersburg will be transformed into a mud pit this weekend.

The annual Extreme Mud Wars is taking place at Spa Beach Park on Saturday, July 16. The event features teams of six to ten men and women competing in various wet and muddy events like football, tug-of-war and dodgeball.

Five thousand sandbags, 80 tons of soil and 8 firehoses are used to transform the waterfront park into a messy obstacle course. The teams paid between $300 and $350 dollars to enter the competition with the money benefiting charities. There is also a charity beer garden, live music and food.

In 2010 Mud Wars raised more than $4,000. ABC Action News correspondent Sean Daly will be live Saturday morning from the event.
