ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - St. Petersburg Police are investigating a Friday night shooting near a high school while a football game was being played.
Investigators say multiple shots were heard around 10:25 p.m. near 58th Avenue South and 16th Street South, about one hundred yards southwest of the Lakewood High School stadium.
There were approximately five minutes left in the football game between Lakewood High and Gibbs High when the gun fire was heard. Players and fans took cover, school administrators decided to suspend play and evacuate the field.
Officers quickly arrived at the location where the shots emanated from and noticed a number of people fleeing the scene in multiple directions.
Police detained one person and during a search of the man, it was discovered he was in possession of marijuana. He was arrested.
No one was found to be injured and no one came forward to tell police they had been assaulted.
Detectives found multiple shell casings of various calibers in the road near the intersection of 58th Avenue and 16th Street.
Officers have learned two young men were arguing before showing off handguns and firing them into the area. Police are investigating the nature of the dispute and believe a number of people witnessed the incident and know who the two men are.
Anyone with information on the shootings is asked to call the St. Petersburg Police Department at (727) 893-7780.
