ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - St. Petersburg firefighters responded to a house fire early Sunday morning.

It happened in the 3300 block of 28th Street N. shortly before 5 a.m.

According to officials, the blaze started in the utility room and spread to the attic.

The family that lived in the home did make it out safely, but reported their three cats and dog were missing.

While the dog reportedly exited the building on its own, firefighters went back in the house and found the cats.

Emergency crews did face the challenge of resuscitating three cats using equipment adapted for animals, because they suffered smoke inhalation.  They are reportedly still alive and in the care of an extended family member.

Red Cross officials responded to the scene to assist the family with temporary housing needs.

The home is reportedly uninhabitable until repairs are complete.
