Child critical after near-drowning at St. Petersburg home

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - A 20-month-old boy was hospitalized in critical condition after falling into a swimming pool at a St. Petersburg home Thursday morning, police say.

Emergency personnel were dispatched to the residence following a 911 call around 10:30 a.m.

According to initial reports, Luke Leavengood was under the supervision of his nanny, Rachael Parr, 42, when he made his way out of an unsecured door at at 1953 Hawaii Avenue NE.

When the nanny discovered him missing, she began searching and found him in the pool of a next door neighbor at 1961 Hawaii Avenue.

The child was taken to All Children's Hospital.  His parents were notified and and were at the hospital.

Neighbors told ABC Action News they would often see the nanny outside with Luke and his twin sister.  They described her as attentive and responsible.

The Leavengood family did not want to comment to media and is requesting privacy.
