ST. PETERSBURG -
A 13-year-old boy from southwestern St. Petersburg was arrested Tuesday after, police say, he brought a gun to the school bus stop Monday morning.
Police say the boy showed the handgun to others present at the bus stop, which services Azalea Middle School.
The boy was suspended from school that day, and did not board the bus.
One of the kids told his mother about the gun. She notified the Azalea school principal, who in turn contacted police.
Tuesday, officers went to the boy's home and spoke to his mother about the incident. She consented officers to search her son's room, where a .380 caliber semi-automatic handgun was located.
They boy admitted bringing the gun to the bus stop, and to showing it to another student. He claimed that he had gotten the gun from another juvenile, and officers are following up on that information.
The boy was charged with one felony count of having possession of a weapon on school property.
