ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - A 24-year-old Brandon woman died early Friday morning after she was struck by a gasoline tanker truck.

The Florida Highway Patrol says the accident occurred just before 3:00 a.m. while the woman was walking in the crosswalk at the intersection of Gandy Boulevard and Brighton Bay Boulevard NE in St. Petersburg.

According to the accident report, a gasoline tanker truck traveling west on Gandy passed under a green traffic light at Brighton Bay and struck the woman. She had been attempting to cross from the south side to the north side of Gandy Boulevard.

Troopers say after the initial impact, a second vehicle traveling west on Gandy struck and ran over the woman. The driver of that vehicle did not remain at the scene of the crash, nor report the accident to law enforcement.

The woman received fatal injuries and died at the scene. Her name has yet to be released pending notification of next of kin.

The driver of the gas tanker, 68-year-old Michael Martin of St. Petersburg, did stop and talk to troopers after striking the woman. According to the FHP, Martin was not under the influence at the time of the crash.

No description of the second vehicle is currently available. If you have information on the second vehicle, you are asked to call the Florida Highway Patrol at (727) 570-5010.

Charges in the accident are pending. The accident remains under investigation.
