SEMINOLE, Fla. - An 84-year old woman died and her husband was injured after their house on Greenbrier Drive caught fire as she was lighting a cigarette late Wednesday night.
Detectives say the fire started while Sonja Skemp was in the bedroom. Somehow, her pajamas caught fire while she was lighting a cigarette and she was unable to stop the flames from spreading.
She called for help and moved from the bedroom to the bathroom. Her husband, Sam, who walks with a cane, was on the other side of the house and unable to come to her aide in a timely manner. She was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The Skemps were married for 62 years. They had lived in their home on Green Briar Drive for over 25 years.
Homicide and Arson investigators found no sign of foul play or outside accelerant at the scene.
