GULFPORT, Fla. - An athletic spectator competition in Gulfport benefits the family of a fallen Tampa Bay area soldier.

U.S. Army Sergeant Major David G. Taylor Jr. died in October of 2006 at the age of 37 during combat operations in Bagdad, Iraq.

Major Taylor was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division in Baumholder, Germany.

The VETSports Wounded Warrior athletes will take on Gulfport's finest and bravest in a Beach Volleyball Benefit.

A live band starts playing at noon and the expected audience will be in the thousands as this group of selfless heroes put on an event to contribute to the VETSports mission of helping Wounded Warriors.

Opening ceremonies start at 1 p.m. at Gulfport Beach and proceeds from the event will be donated to Taylor's family.
