GULFPORT, Fla. - Downtown Gulfport will be abuzz Saturday with a walking parade, street performers, and the infamous Street Dance.
Geckofest is an annual tradition in the hip Pinellas County neighborhood - taking place September 1.
Admission is free at the family-friendly street festival, and features a "Mardi Gras Meets the Renaissance" walking parade with a gecko theme to celebrate Labor Day weekend and the end of summer.
Street party guests include the o-Fish-al Gecko Goddess and the Gecko Governor with exotic roving character and street performers. Costume categories this year include best "Hooray for Geckowood!" themed costume, best decorated umbrella and best hat.
6 p.m. - Audience participation parade: Staging begins at 5:30 p.m. in front of the Gulfport Casino, 5500 Shore Blvd. S. Registration is not required. Just join in at the casino or anywhere along the Beach Boulevard parade route.
6:30 p.m. - Costume contest
8 p.m. - Street dance featuring the Urban Gypsies
