Two deputies with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office were injured Friday morning in a traffic crash on southbound Interstate 75 near Sun City Center.
The southbound lanes were shut down for part of the morning. All lanes were reopened around 11 a.m.
Captain Steve Launikitis had pulled over a motorcyclist just after 8:02 a.m., and Master Deputy Chris Davis arrived shortly thereafter to assist. Both deputies were standing on the grass shoulder speaking with the stopped motorcyclist, Bryan Martinez of Valrico.
A second motorcyclist, Bryan Edmonston of Kissimmee, was traveling southbound on I-75 and failed to realize that traffic was slowing due to the traffic stop. The second motorcyclist struck the deputies and the motorcycle of the traffic stop. The motorcyclist of the traffic stop was not injured.
According to a sheriff's statement, the two deputies saw that they were about to be hit and took action to prevent Martinez from being struck.
Both deputies were air-lifted to Tampa General Hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries. Both deputies were alert and talking while being transported.
Edmonston has not been charged as the investigation continues.
The second motorcyclist was also taken to Tampa General Hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries.
