SARASOTA, Fla. - Trader Joe's, an offbeat grocery store with a cult-like following, will soon open a store in Sarasota.
After opening a store in Naples -- the first TJ's in Florida -- just last Friday, the company said it plans to open one at 4101 S. Tamiami Trail, in a former Rooms To Go location.
Similar to the Whole Foods chain, Trader Joe's stores tend to be smaller than a typical grocery store. They also carry hundreds of items under their own brand.
The chain started out in Southern California as a small chain of convenience stores called Pronto Markets in 1958. A decade later, the name changed to Trader Joe's, the stores got a little bigger, and began decorating with a South Pacific theme.
They now have more than 350 stores across the USA.
