SARSOTA COUNTY, Fla. - A Sarasota County woman who had just finished showering heard someone snoring in her closet Saturday afternoon. Before it was over, there was gunfire, injuries, a pursuit and a SWAT standoff.
The woman, Rosa Denigris, had just stepped out of the shower when she heard the snoring. She opened the closet door and saw a man, later identified as Jason Wayo, asleep.
Denigris contacted a neighbor, Guiseppe Recchia, who then contacted another neighbor, Christopher Bonati, a retired police officer.
Bonati armed himself with a Colt handgun and went to the home on Tempest Harbor Loop along with Recchia. When Bonati looked in the closet, he saw Wayo counting money, according to the report.
Bonati ordered Wayo not to move, but Bonati was bumped and Wayo grabbed the gun.
A struggle followed and the gun went off. Recchia was shot in the left hand and Wayo was hit in the hand and arm. Bonati was beaten in the face and suffered severe bone injuries.
Wayo then pointed the gun at Denigris and ordered her to give him her car keys. He then fled in her white Kia van, which was later located by authorities.
Investigators say Wayo fled the scene on foot to a home at 3674 Rosalyn Road in Venice.
Deputies and a SWAT team surrounded the home and Wayo eventually surrendered.
He's now charged with armed robbery, aggravated battery, fleeing to elude and leaving the scene of a crash.
He was jailed without bond.
