SARASOTA - A person suspected of being the driver who fled the scene after killing a 15-year-old pedestrian and injuring his best friend is now in custody.

Fifty-year-old Kim Leto of Sarasota is now charged with one count of leaving the scene of a crash with death and one count of leaving the scene of a crash with injury. She was located by Florida Highway Patrol investigators and was arrested late Sunday night.

Lt. Chris Miller said Leto did not turn herself in but refused to elaborate on exactly how she was arrested.

Saturday troopers say Brenden Edward Barnes, 15, and Samuel Garvin,16, were headed west in a westbound bicycle lane on Whitfield Avenue near Tuttle Avenue around 10:20 p.m, when Leto drove up from behind in a 2008 GMC SUV and veered into the bicycle lane, striking the teens.

Troopers said there were no skid marks at the scene and they don't believe Leto ever stopped before she fled the scene.

Despite being injured Garvin was able to described the vehicle as a black or dark-colored sport utility vehicle with damage to the right front of the car. He is being treated at Manatee Memorial Hospital, however Barnes didn't make it there.

He died at the scene.

"The family is hurting," said family friend, Robert Martin.

He added the family just wants justice.

"I don't think it's a revenge issue," he said.

"It's just sort of closure and why would this happen. Was it a mistake? Was it irresponsibility?"

Leto is set to go before a judge Monday afternoon.
