SARASOTA, Fla. - Deputies in Sarasota County said a school board employee stole $500 worth of metal from the school and sold it for $29.75.

Deputies arrested 44-year-old Keith Cochrane of North Port around 1 p.m. Monday.

The arrest record states that Cochrane brought 17 pounds of yellow brass fittings to Al Gluecks Auto Parts in Osprey. Sarasota County School Board Director Judy Dumas later identified the brass fittings as belonging to the Board and stolen from its warehouse on Beneva Road in Sarasota.

Deputies said Cochrane was granted unrestricted access to the warehouse as a facilities maintenance employee.

Deputies said Cochrane provided a valid Florida driver's license when he pawned the scrap metal.

They said he also provided his thumb print, signed his name, and was caught on surveillance camera.
