BRADENTON, Fla. - A gunman is at large after a drive-by shooting wounded a 4-year-old boy who was in what is believed to be a targeted home.
An orange vehicle wanted by deputies Saturday night has been located. Deputies no longer believe the vehicle is related to the case.
According to Manatee County Sheriff Brad Steube, the boy was shot in the head around 11:20 a.m. Saturday, but is expected to survive after being airlifted for treatment at two St. Petersburg hospitals.
Several shots were fired, but one bullet entered the boy's bedroom and wounded him. Steube and MCSO officials did not state the extent of the boy's head wound., but he is now in "stable" condition after being transferred from Bayfront Medical Center to All Children's Hospital.
Steube said it appeared the gunman was targeting the home at 2603 36th Ave. W. for a reason that is still being investigated.
The boy's mother was also at home at the time, but she was not injured.
Detectives are asking anyone with information to contact the sheriff's office at 941-747-3011 or Crime Stoppers at 866-634-TIPS.
