WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - A Winter Haven man is behind bars, after police say he had sex with a 16-year-old girl he met on a dating website. Tonight, the city's top cop says parents need to know about these new sites their kids can access from places other than their computer.
Police arrested 27-year-old Jeffery Krug. They say he meet the teen girl around Thankgsgiving on a website called Meet Moi. Investigators say he sent her videos of himself naked. And then, last month, he met up with her and had sex with her in his car.
Lorna Suarez has two kids and watches them closely when they are online. She says she's never heard of 'Meet Moi,' and isn't too savvy about new social networking sites. "Most of them I don't know. The internet for my kids is very limited."
Websites like Meet Moi or location-based mobile dating, lets users know of other site members nearby, and shows how close they are. You can also locate them on your phone.
Winter Haven Police Chief Gary Hester says there are many websites similar to Meet Moi. He urges parents to educate themselves about what's on the web. Chief Hester said, "Parents need to be involved in their kid's life. They need to be aware of the social media that they're participating in. They need to look at their computers. They need to have the passwords to the computers and they need to engage that."
That's the normal routine for Patricia Tupps. She's installed software from the Polk County Sheriff's Office on her daughter's computer, to keep an eye on her activity. Tupps said, "It comes in handy when your kids don't want to tell you what their password is or what they're doing. You can actually go in there and actually see what they've been doing."
When it comes to the World Wide Web, Chief Hester says there's a generational gap. He encourages parents to enroll in cyber safety courses sponsored by local law enforcement agencies.
Jeffrey Krug is charged with two counts of sexual activity with a minor and is in the Polk County Jail. Police say the teen's father did find out about the online activity, but not until it was too late.
