MULBERRY, Fla. - The Polk County Sheriff's Office responded responded to calls of a suicidal person inside a home on Poinsettia Drive around noon Sunday.

According to Sheriff Grady Judd, deputies heard shots fired from inside the home when they arrived on scene.

Shortly after their arrival the suspect, 42-year-old Doug Meadow, turned the gun on the deputies.

Polk County Sheriff deputy Lt. Terrie Storie was struck in the leg by a bullet after it struck the ground and rebounded.

Officials say Storie was taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center with minor injuries.

Polk County's SWAT team responded to the scene.

During the stand-off deputies learned that Meadows wife was inside the house with him. At some point she was able to escape. Officials say she later told deputies that her husband said he was trying to shoot a deputy.

Deputies could not determine where Meadows was in the home, so they could not return fire.

Authorities say they deployed a robot to get closer to the home to locate Meadows. As the robot approached the house Meadows reportedly fired several shots at the machine.

Officers resulted to another tactic to try and get Meadows out of the home. They deployed tear gas into the house, causing Meadows to surrender.

He is in the custody of Polk County Sheriff's Office and is being booked into the county jail. Meadows faces seven counts of attempted first degree murder on a law enforcement officer.
