BARTOW, Fla - Authorities say an inmate collapsed and died while waiting in line for lunch at the Polk County jail.

The Polk County Sheriff's Office says 50-year-old Robert Joseph Lorenz began slumping over around noon Sunday.

He was caught by a corrections officer and taken to the Polk County Jail infirmary. A sheriff's report says Lorenz was unresponsive when he was taken by ambulance to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Lorenz had been in jail for about a week. He was jailed for violating his probation on a petty theft charge.

According to a sheriff's office report, Lorenz did not notify jail officials of any pre-existing conditions when he was booked.
