LAKE WALES, Fla. - A woman who faces attempted murder charges for stabbing her 7-year-old son told authorities that she did it because she was hearing voices, according to the Polk County affidavit.
The child survived after his mother stabbed him multiple times in the chest at their Lake Wales home Tuesday morning, police said.
After her Miranda rights were read to her, 42-year-old Maisa Alvarez confessed to deputies that she heard voices telling her to kill the boy.
She said she went into the kitchen, got two kitchen knives and thought about killing herself, but she couldn’t do it.
She then went into her sleeping son’s room and placed chains around his wrist, locking his hands together.
She began to stab him in the arms, chest and shoulders, she said. When her son woke up, he said, “What are you doing?”
Alvarez said she stopped, unchained his hands and called 911.
"[Police found] a bloody bedroom, blood on the blankets, blood on the floor," said Deputy Troy Schulze with Lake Wales Police Department.
The boy was flown to Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando in stable condition.
After receiving treatment, the victim was released into the care of his father.
Alvarez had her first court appearance Wednesday and is now being held in jail without bond.
