LAKELAND, Fla. - Polk County reports it's first rabies case with a raccoon in Lakeland that tested positive for the virus on Friday.

Polk County Animal Control captured a raccoon after it attacked someone’s dog at Hallamwood Court in Lakeland.

Lab results showed that the raccoon was infected with the rabies virus. The bitten dog is now under quarantine for the next six months.
Residents within a five mile radius were informed of the raccoon’s condition. There is concern because there may be more raccoons in the area.
