PLANT CITY, Fla. - Former Polk County football standout Tyease Thompson was killed after apparently failing to negotiate a curve at high speed on a stolen dirt bike Friday night.
According to Hillsborough County Sheriff's spokesperson Larry McKinnon, Thompson, 27, was driving a 2008 Honda dirt bike on Joe King Road, near Nesmith Road, just before 7 p.m., when he lost control and crashed into a guardrail.
Thompson died at the scene.
"The motorcycle Thompson was operating had been previously reported stolen in Hillsborough County," McKinnon said. "It was returned to the rightful owner."
Thompson was a well-known running back and track athlete who spent time in the Fort Meade and George Jenkins programs.
In college, Thompson played the 2004 season for Iowa State, predominately as a kick returner.

Wildlife officials say 20 whales believed to be part of a pod found stranded in the Everglades this week were spotted Friday afternoon moving closer toward shore, a sign they may be reversing their earlier, positive course.
