LAKELAND, Fla. - A man trying make an illegal street drug called "Shake N Bake" crashed his car and died when the chemicals exploded, according to Lakeland police.
The crash on Tuesday was initially reported as an overturned vehicle with injuries.
But witnesses said there appeared to be some kind of commotion inside the vehicle before it overturned.
Officers learned there was another person in the vehicle who fled on foot. Police were able to find the person, identified as Jerek Evans, 26.
After interviewing Evans and looking at evidence in the vehicle, the driver, 36-year-old Clifford Ellison, apparently mixed chemicals in a glass liquor bottle to make the "Shake N Bake."
The chemicals exploded while they were driving and pieces of the bottle struck Ellison in the neck, killing him, according to police.
The investigation is ongoing and no charges had been filed at the time of the police statement.
