LAKE WALES, Fla. - A Polk County man was arrested after authorities say he tried to set his mom on fire Tuesday, according to Lake Wales Police.

Matthew Paul Kelly, 33, is facing charges of battery and domestic violence.

Kelly’s car ran out of gas and he asked his mom, Patricia Cline, for a ride to the gas station at 5:30 p.m., according to a Lakeland Ledger report. ( http://bit.ly/RR5IjP )

As she took him back to his car, he became upset at the situation.

Cline grew so concerned over her son’s behavior she tried to take him to a hospital for an evaluation.

An altercation occurred at Cline stopped the car. At this point Kelly got out of the car, took the gas can and poured it over his mother.

He reportedly told his mother he was already going to jail, so he’d kill them both.

As he reached for a lighter his mother drove away. She was not injured.

Kelly fled, but was arrested on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m.
