BARTOW, Fla. - The author of a how-to guide for pedophiles is scheduled to appear before a Polk County judge in Bartow this afternoon.
Philip Greaves was arrested in Colorado on Monday after sending a signed copy of “The Pedophile’s Guide to Love and Pleasure” to undercover Polk detectives.
Sheriff Grady Judd said Greaves violated Florida's obscenity law, a third-degree felony.
He was booked into the Polk County jail on Tuesday on $15,000 bond. He said Tuesday he cannot afford the bond, but believes he was entrapped and expects to win his case.
Greaves said Tuesday he has never had sexual contact with minors.
"I only have sex with grown-ups,” Greaves said, adding he 'most certainly' does not consider himself a pedophile.
Defense attorney and First Amendment expert Lawrence Walters says Florida's obscenity law has been used in the past for pornographic images, not words. He believes Greaves has a good chance at beating the charges.
“I believe so, and I believe the taxpayers of Polk County, Florida, unfortunately, are going to be footing the bill for his wrongful arrest suit,” Walters said.
"We didn't do this in a vacuum," Sheriff Judd told CNN. He said his office acted after consulting with the State Attorney's Office and other legal experts.
Greaves' book has already been through one round of controversy. The publication recently provoked public outrage and debate over free speech after it was listed on Amazon.com which, in turn, removed it from its listings.
ABC Action News reporter George Michael was among those who spoke with Greaves on Tuesday. Click the video player above to see his report.
