BARTOW, Fla. - A high school military academy in Polk County sent a clear message on this Veteran's Day to all members of the armed forces, past and present.

The Summerlin Academy in Bartow hosted its fourth annual Veteran's Day ceremony for the community Friday morning. The event was an opportunity for kids to honor all veterans.

"I think sometimes students get a bad rap," said Michael Butler, Principal of Summerlin. "We're trying to imprint with them the idea that it’s important to recognize people who contribute to our society."

Summerlin Academy prepares kids for college, life after school, and often times, the service.

Many of the 600 cadets at the academy have a personal connection with Veteran's Day.

"It means a lot to me because it’s my family who I’m honoring," said Meagen Stewart, Senior. "I get to honor those who are serving, have served, or who will serve."

It doesn't take long to find people who "will serve" in this group. Dalton Lyon is heading to basic training in Missouri after he graduates in June.

"I want to be able to fight for my country, keep the freedom rights up, and follow my family’s footstep," he said.

Summerlin Academy is only 6-years old. It's one of three military academies in the state.
