PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. - A 12- foot long alligator was hit not once, but twice by two cars on Interstate 275 near Gandy Boulevard around 12:30 a.m. Sunday, the Florida Highway Patrol reported.

Initially, the gator tried to cross the Interstate, officials said.

The gator was struck by Bruce Foley, 42, as he was traveling north on I-275. The reptile was able to make its way back to nearby woods after being hit.

30 minutes later, the alligator resurfaced on the other side of the Interstate and attempted to cross again. This time he was hit by Verna Christopherson, 80.

The second blow killed the gator. The carcass was removed from the highway by a local trapper.

Both vehicles were damaged.
