ST. PETERSBURG, Fla - UPDATE: Police say a deadly house fire Wednesday night was arson and a suspect is in custody. He's identified as Daniel Thomas Papaleo, 60.
He was placed under police guard at a local hospital where is being treated for injuries he sustained in the fire. He is listed in stable condition.
PREVIOUS REPORT: One man died and another injured in a fire that ripped through a St. Petersburg home Wednesday evening.
Neighbors called 911 to report seeing flames at 1030 13th Street North. When fire crews arrived, they found a man in the front yard acting strangely and believe he was suffering from mild smoke inhalation.
"We found him in the bushes,"said Lt. Joel Granata with St. Pete Fire Rescue.
As crews started battling 25-foot tall flames, they found the body of another man at the back of the home. That man, according Granata, was badly burned and also suffered from smoke inhalation. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Granata said the fire also ripped through power lines in the back of the home and forced the power company to cut power to house.
Authorities are not releasing the identities of the deceased or injured.
Homicide detectives are on scene because the death has been deemed suspicious.
Fire investigators are also on scene trying figure out what caused this fatal fire.
The surviving male is stable but is unable to answer questions, Granata explained.
