Pedestrian told by officer to get out of St. Pete road dies after getting hit by car

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - A pedestrian who was warned by a St. Petersburg police officer to get out of the road got hit by a vehicle shortly after and died from his injuries, police confirm.

20-year-old John Vincent Sullo was walking south bound on 4th Street North in the curb lane at 1:30 Friday morning when the accident happened.

A Tampa Police officer saw him walking in the middle of the street and told him to get to a position of safety. The pedestrian refused to listen and he stayed in the middle of the southbound lanes. The officer located a St. Pete officer in the area.

At that time, 41-year-old Jason Hawkins was driving south bound on the 10600 block of 4th street. The front of Hawkin's SUV struck the pedestrian.

St. Pete officers arrived to the scene just as the accident took place.

The victim was taken to Bayfront Medical Center in serious condition and he was pronounced dead at 2:12 a.m.

His father, John L. Sutto, has been notified.

It isn't clear whether the driver will face any charges.

The St. Petersburg Police are investigating.
