ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The new St. Petersburg Pier, the "Lens," is coming into focus and we now know at least one business that will be there in 2015. Richard Gonzmart, president of Columbia Group, said he will open a restaurant.
The Columbia has had more than 20 years of history at the St. Petersburg Pier, and that relationship will now continue.
Mayor Bill Foster, city leaders and Columbia Group President Richard Gonzmart made the announcement this afternoon. Gonzmart said the new restaurant will have an overseas decor.
Gonzmart said, "It's going to be more like Barcelona. More of the towers of Barcelona and what you're going to be envisioning is a beautiful view. Outdoor dining for about 100 people and with a roof top area that you can celebrate life."
Cocktails and tapas will be served on the rooftop. The restaurant will also seat around 200 people inside. Gonzmart says he's looking for people to work there. Gonzmart said, "We're looking to create over 130 jobs. We're looking to invest more than $3 million in this project. We're looking to put people back to work. We're looking to make this an exciting place to visit."
The existing Columbia at the St. Pete Pier will close on May 31. The City of St. Petersburg will provide $500,000 for construction of the new facility, which will be under a 10-month lease.
Doors are tentatively scheduled to open on Labor Day 2015.
