CLEARWATER, Fl - Clearwater police have unveiled a new fraud hotline they hope will help area residents avoid being scammed.
The hotline is meant to be more of an educational tool or road map to guide people on potential scams. It is not designed for people who have actually suffered monetary losses or the victims of crime.
The hotline number is 727.562.4424.
The line is staffed weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Callers can leave a message when the line is not staffed and their call will be returned later.
"Learn before you're burned," said Detective Meg Hasty.
Hasty advises that you should never do business with someone you don't know and never do business with someone who approaches you unsolicited at your home or out on the streets.
