PINELLAS PARK, Fla - A Pinellas County mother says her 11-year-old son found a box cutter in an unopened bag of candy she purchased at an area Walmart.
"He came over to me and said, 'Mom, did you open the candy yet?'" recalled Heidi Moran.
"And I said, 'You can't open it either. It is for Halloween.' And he said, 'Well, there is a razor blade in it.'"
When Moran went to inspect the bag she didn't find a razor blade but a red box cutter. It could be clearly seen through the front of the bag.
"I was shocked for a while actually. I didn't know what to do with it. I just kept looking at it," the mother of two explained.
Moran told us she purchased the bag of candy at the Walmart Neighborhood Market off 66th Street in Pinellas Park on October 22. She said the box cutter was not discovered in the bag until October 24.
Moran provided ABC Action News with a copy of her receipt showing she purchased the bag of candy at that store.
According to Moran, all sides of the bag were sealed. We inspected the bag and found it was also sealed.
"I was going to dump it in a bowl actually and put it on our patio like we always do," Moran said.
ABC Action News took Moran's concerns to Walmart officials.
Elizabeth Harden, who works with Walmart media relations, told ABC Action News the company takes what happened seriously and are tracking down the bag's lot number determine how and where this could have happened.
Moran said she doesn't blame Walmart. She is just happy the box cutter didn't end up in the hands of a child.
"It could've been much worse. It really could've been if the blade had been open. Thank goodness it wasn't. It was closed," Moran concluded.
Walmart officials are now in contact with Moran. They told us they are working with her to resolve this issue.
They added they are now working with suppliers to try and understand how this happened. Officials added they do not feel this was intentional and they're grateful no one was hurt.
