ST. PETERSBURG BEACH, Fla. - The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office says a worker was killed in an elevator accident Wednesday morning at the Tradewinds Island Resort in St. Petersburg Beach.
The elevator fell on the victim and crushed him at the Jacaranda Beach Villas, a resort condominium at the Tradewinds.
According to a report from the scene, the victim worked for SWS Environmental Services and was on the ground floor along with a co-worker.
The company was hired to clean up oil at the bottom of the elevator shaft. The victim was inside the shaft vacuuming up the oil.
The elevator was locked in position by hotel maintenance on the second floor. For some unknown reason, the elevator dropped and killed the worker, identified as 45-year-old Mark Allen Johnson of Tampa.
OSHA was called to respond.
Sheriff's deputies are investigating the incident as an accidental death.
