NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. - Everything seemed normal in the New Port Richey neighborhood until Tim Weidman walked by 7617 Mitchell Ranch Road. He heard what sounded like his elderly neighbor in distress.
"He calls me over. I start to walk over and he tells me that he can't move his legs," Weidman recalled.
After getting the garage up, Weidman says he learned his neighbor, 90-year-old Justyn Ambrozia, had been stuck in his car for four full days.
"He definitely needed help and I couldn't help him as much as I'd like to so I had to get the ambulance here as soon as possible," Weidman said.
Neighbors tell ABC Action News Ambrozia, who goes by the nickname "Jay," was dehydrated and so slumped over he could barely see over his steering wheel.
"He looked at me with those sad eyes and said 'I've been trying to get a hold of you, sir,'" said next-door neighbor Carl Frantz. "I just welled up and had to walk out. I had tears running down my face."
Frantz said Ambrozia told them he tripped at Publix and broke his hip and his arm.
Neighbors tell us Ambrozia said the store employees helped him get back in his car. But by the time he got home, he was too weak to get himself out.
So for four days, neighbors say he lived in his car in the garage on cookies, cake, and empty ice-cream cones.
His neighbor, John Collins, said Ambrozia told him he kept track of time with cookies on the dashboard.
Ambrozia is now recovering at the Medical Center of Trinity. On Tuesday, he turned down an interview request.
A store spokesman for Publix, Brian West, said the store has made contact with Ambrozia and his family.
Publix is doing an internal investigation into the incident. West said, "Our thoughts are with him and his family. We don't want to wish anything bad on anybody."
