NEW PORT RICHEY - When given the chance to spend time with his family, or check out a neighbor's new car, 19-year-old Dimitri Kalogiannis' decision was not a hard one, but it was a lucky one.
"I decided to stay and actually hang out with my neighbor," he said.
As Kalogiannis looked over the vintage purchase he heard a baby was in the water.
"We didn't know what was going on. That is when we saw the baby near that boat," he said.
He said he couldn't believe what he saw.
"I started to see the baby bobbing up and down. The man wasn't really staying afloat either. He was turning the baby slowly not really keeping it above or under the water," Kalogiannis said.
According to the Pasco County Sheriff's Office, the man in the water was 39-year-old Kevin Geddes. They said he was swinging the 14-month-old baby near the canal around 7:00 p.m., Saturday when they both fell in. Kalogiannis acted quickly and dove into the water.
"The man was actually quiet the whole time. He just handed it over very easily," he said.
Authorities said because a child is involved they can not reveal Geddes' relationship to the baby, but investigators did say he appeared to be drinking.
"Once I had the baby in my hands I wasn't really sure if it was okay. I did hear it breathing and at that point I knew he was okay," said Kalogiannis.
This is not Kalogiannis' first time in the spotlight. Two years ago during the Epiphany in Tarpon Springs he pulled the cross from the water. Tradition states the boy with the cross will receive good luck for a year. Some would say it lasted two.
"I was just doing something I thought was right," he said.
Moments after the rescue authorities said the baby received CPR and was then air lifted to All Children's Hospital. Deputies said he is expected to make a full recovery.
Geddes, who is charged with aggravated child neglect, made his first appearance in court Sunday morning. Bond was set at $7,500.
