PASCO COUNTY, Fla - A Dade City nursing assistant is accused of stealing from residents at a retirement home where she worked.
Dade City detectives arrested Tashoni Cheatum, 30, at Edwinola Retirement Community.
Cheatum, of the 7500 block of Merchantville Circle, in Zephyrhills, is charged with two counts of grand theft from persons 65 years of age or older, involving residents of the Edwinola.
In one case, Cheatum is alleged to have removed an ATM card from the room of a 96-year-old woman and used the card to withdraw $300 from the Wells Fargo bank on July 31, 2013.
In a separate incident, on September 15, 2013, police say that Cheatum took $500 from the purse of an 86-year-old woman while the resident was using the bathroom in her room.
Both crimes are third degree felonies.
After her arrest, Cheatum was booked and transported to the Land O' Lakes Detention Center.
"Crimes of this sort are particularly upsetting because the suspects prey on the most vulnerable segment of our population and it will not be tolerated," said Chief Ray Velboom.
"These crimes can be personally and financially devastating to the victims and their families and we will continue to aggressively pursue those responsible."
