BELLEAIR BEACH, Fla. - Mary Lou Cutler is downsizing from her house of 25 years. With the help of family members, she's been slowly moving out. And yesterday, there was a large selection of items by the curb that were free for the taking.
But somebody took it a step further and went beyond the driveway, through the carport and into the yard where they snatched a motorcycle helmet and a vintage leather riding jacket belonging to Mary Lou's granddaughter, Jasmine.
"I was so upset. I wanted to cry, but I was so mad that I couldn't," remarked Jasmine Cutler.
Jasmine says she placed the helmet and jacket in an out-of-the-way place to keep it safe.
"Nobody should have been back there, because all of the things we were giving away were up in front, out there by the street," explained Mary Lou.
Although the items that were taken were far out of view from the things that were being offered for free, Mary Lou wants to believe in the good of all people.
"I do have trouble believing someone would steal something like that. But, it's the way it is, I guess. And yes, I am surprised," said Mary Lou.
Quickly, a family member posted a plea on the Craigslist 'Free' section, asking that the items be returned; hoping that it was a mistake.
Neighbor Doug Prescott isn't sure it was a mistake.
"It's obvious, they've got the free sign out here giving things away. And it's a shame that somebody comes in here and takes advantage of the situation," said Prescott.
For now, Jasmine is using an old helmet and a cloth jacket when she rides.
"I'd really appreciate getting that stuff back," Jasmine said.
Mary Lou also has a message for the person that walked off with the items.
"I'd kind of like to say would you mind bringing it back, or maybe just putting it by the front door," she said.
