TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Two Plant High School seniors were involved in a car accident Friday night in Jefferson County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Troopers say 18-year-old Amanda Pierce was driving up to Tallahassee to pick up her sister from Florida State University with her friend, 18-year-old Taylor Lazzara.
The women were traveling west on Interstate 10 when traffic started to come to a stop due to two other crashes ahead of them.
According to FHP, Pierce swerved to the right to try and avoid hitting the stopped car in front of her. Pierce’s car spun around as it headed onto the shoulder of the interstate.
The car struck a tree on the left front side as it entered the shoulder.
The women were taken to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. Pierce passed away at 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon Lazzara was later released.
Parents of Plant HS students received an automated phone call from Principal Robert Nelson notifying them of Pierce’s passing.
A vigil was held Saturday night in memory of her.
Hillsborough County Schools are currently on spring break. Grief counselors will be made available to students upon their return to school.
