Tampa, Fl. - First there was Black Friday, then Cyber Monday and now a new shopping day is designed to draw shoppers to local businesses. It's called Small Business Saturday and for Thatcher Iverson, it means shopping close to home.
"I think it is important to keep our money in our community," said Iverson. "It helps our community to flourish."
For every dollar Iverson and others spend at local businesses like Urban Body Clothing on Howard Avenue in Tampa, the Tampa Independent Business Alliance says $0.45 of that dollar will stay in the local community compared to $0.13 when shopping at a name brand store.
The Better Business Bureau teamed up with American Express to spread the word and according to the credit card's Facebook page millions pledge to not only shop on small business Saturday, but the rest of the year -- giving business owners like Scott Moore a one on one connection with customers.
"When you shop at a big box store you have one person in new York making a decision as to what you will wear or what you won't wear," said Moore. "When I go to buy I buy things for my customers specifically in mind."
At Inkwood Books on South Armenia, Katie Habgood is using the day as a teaching lesson for her daughters. She said it is a good way to teach them the importance of spending local.
It's a lesson President Barack Obama took the time to teach his daughters while stopping at a local book store in Washington, D.C.
"I like smaller stores. I like the local stores -- I think it's what makes a city unique and gives a city flavor," said Habgood.
