TAMPA - A total of 739 students were expelled from Hillsborough County schools in 2009-10, including nearly a dozen for bringing a gun to school, district officials said Monday. It's a substantial reduction from the number of expulsions in 2008-09, when 788 children were expelled.
Eisenhower Middle School had the most expulsions, with 25. It was followed by Blake High School (23), Shields Middle School (23), Dowdell Middle School (20), and East Bay High School (20).
Six elementary school students were expelled, including two who were only nine-years-old.
The most common reason for expulsion was disruptive behavior. However, there were numerous weapons violations. Ten students were charged with bringing guns to campus, and 52 brought knives to school. Each offense is considered a zero tolerance offense, resulting in automatic expulsion.
One student was expelled for passing counterfeit money.
