TAMPA - A 16-year-old Hillsborough High School student was seriously injured when she was hit by two cars while walking to school Thursday morning.
Tampa Police say Andra Glover was trying to cross the intersection of Martin Luther King and Central just after 7:00 Thursday morning.
She was just blocks away from the school when she was hit by a car and then run over by a second.
Police say Glover was in the cross walk, however, she did not have the right of way.
Both cars had the green light and say they didn't see her in the crosswalk.
Brenda Balla, a business owner in the area, says she sees students crossing that busy intersection all the time, some without paying attention to the traffic signs.
"They're in a hurry to get to school," says Balla.
"Or in a hurry coming from school, so they never wait for the light."
Andrea Davis, spokeswoman with the Tampa Police Department, says they encourage students and anyone else walking around dusk and dawn to wear light clothing, make sure that you are in the crosswalk at all times when crossing the intersection and make sure that you are always crossing when you have the light.
A spokesman for Hillsborough County Schools says before each school year starts, they inform parents of safety precautions their hildren should be taking as they make their way to school.
He says they intend to send a similar message out Thursday detailing the importance of walker safety.
While Glover's injuries were not make specific, we have been told she is expected to recover.
The two drivers involved in the accident have not been charged at this point, however, the investigation is ongoing.
