TAMPA - The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office is investigating one of its detention sergeants after an alleged assault on an inmate.

Investigators say, that detention officer Sergeant Michael Gonzalez assaulted inmate Mark Luft. Gonzalez is now an inmate in the county jail on a $500 bond.

Sheriff's report says Luft was moved to a housing unit after causing a disturbance in the jail's booking area on Saturday. Gonzalez and a couple other officers were in the room when Gonzalez struck and kicked Luft in the face and head. Another deputy that witnessed the incident reported it to a jail supervisor.

When Gonzalez showed up for work Sunday, he was relieved of his duties and after questioning was arrested. Gonzalez has been employed as a detention officer since 1990.
