THONOTOSASSA, Fla. - A man is in jail Saturday night after killing his neighbor with a hammer at a mobile home, located at 6427 Black Diary Road, Hillsborough County Sheriff deputies say.

Around 1:45 p.m. Jonathan Acree, 48, was talking to a friend in his front yard when his neighbor, Jarrett Brooks, 27, approached him from behind.

Deputies say Brooks hit Acree in the head and neck multiple times with a hammer. Acree suffered serious injuries and was taken to Brandon Hospital where he later died.

When deputies responded to the scene Brooks retreated inside his house, barricading himself inside.

Deputies surrounded the house and called SWAT and Crisis Negotiators to assist. For about two and a half hours officials attempted to make contact with Brooks only to receive no response.

At 4:30 p.m. teams set off a chemical agent inside the house forcing Brooks to walk out of his home and surrender.

It is still unclear why Brooks attacked Acree and what background the two men may have had.

No law enforcement officers received any injuries during the event.

100 other residents at the mobile home park were temporarily evacuated due to the SWAT situation. They have all returned to their homes.
