TAMPA - Fred Karl, who served on the Florida Supreme Court and played a major role in Hillsborough County government, died early Thursday at 88.
Former Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio announced his passing in an email to Tampa Bay area media:
"Fred Karl passed away early this morning; his family asked that I share this news with you. By his side was his wife Mercedes and his devoted family.
Fred Karl was born May 14, 1924.
He was a former Legislator, Florida Supreme Court Justice, Hillsborough County Attorney, Hillsborough County Administrator, President and CEO of Tampa General Hospital, and Tampa City Attorney.
There will be a memorial service to be held at the Fred B. Karl County Center.
Below are my personal comments about Fred:
Fred Karl was born to be a public servant. He tackled issues with a sense of fairness, respect and honesty, always reflecting his personal and professional high standards. His values and character were shaped in large part by his generation that viewed duty, sacrifice and civic engagement as necessary components of a full and meaningful life.
Fred has left a significant legacy to our state, county and city. For me, he has been a friend and a mentor who always generously shared his wisdom and support. He will be deeply missed by all whose lives he touched and shaped."
