TAMPA, Fla. - Hillsborough County Fire Rescue battled a two-alarm fire at a metal recycling plant in the Port Sutton area for much of Monday morning and into the afternoon.
The fire burned at a business called One Steel located on Causeway Boulevard, west of US 41 on Port Sutton Road and 50th Street
When fire crews arrived about 4:15 a.m., they found a large pile of metal on fire.
Flames could been seen shooting from the rubbish.
"It sounded like rapid gunshots going off. Then all of a sudden the flames started shooting up," said Marcus Tenneson.
Smoke from the blaze could be seen as far away as St. Petersburg.
So far, no health concerns have been reported because of the smoke.
According to Hillsborough County Fire Rescue, they had to get creative to kill the flames because it came dangerously close to two large containers of calcium nitrate.
For hours, crews used water and foam to try and control the fire.
The cause of the fire is not yet clear.
