HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. - A Tampa resident threatening to shoot himself was shot by a deputy early Wednesday morning.

The man, identified as George Garrett, 65, was later pronounced dead at Tampa General Hospital, according to Colonel Donna Lusczynski.

The deputy responded to the 1000 block of Turner Road in the Palm River area around 3:20 a.m. following a report that an armed man was threatening to kill himself with a handgun.

As the situation progressed, the deputy shot the man out of fear for his own life, Lusczynski said.

The deputy was not injured.
