HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. - "It surprised me, very surprised me," was Arnold Giles reaction to the news his long time neighbor, Pamela Belo had been arrested, "I thought she was a very nice lady. She's a cop. As far as I know, I haven't seen nothing wrong over there."
Pamela Belo is a cop. She is a 23 year veteran with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.
But on Monday, Belo was arrested and charged with Misdemeanor Animal Cruelty and Felony Animal Cruelty.
The charges stem from a Sheriff's Office investigation that found that two of four miniature horses at Belo's Hillsborough County property were in such bad shape that one later died from starvation.
RVR Horse Rescue told ABC Action News they contacted the Sheriff's Office after the rescue group was called out to Belo's home to help her with the horses.
Shawn Jayroe, with RVR, says she was angered and cried at the same time when she saw the state of the horses, specifically one called Warrior.
She expressed that exasperation to us saying, "It just upset me so bad, how she could go in her house and fix herself a meal while this little pony lay on the side of her house starving."
Belo was first suspended without pay by the Sheriff's Office, she then resigned, and on Monday then was arrested and charged. She has since bonded out.
It is a story 16 year neighbor Arnold has a hard time believing.
"I'd say there is something wrong there someplace cause I know she fed them horses and stuff," Arnold said.
