HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY - An armed robbery suspect punched an officer and tried to gouge his eyes out in an attempt to flee from arrest Monday afternoon, according to a report from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputy Felix Moret was flagged down by Wilbur Gates at a bus stop at Sheldon Road and Gross Point Blvd.
Gates told the deputy he had just been robbed at gunpoint by a man on a bicycle.
Moret saw the suspect, identified as 21-year-old Lamont Graddy, fleeing from the area. The deputy chased Graddy, came in contact with him and Graddy reportedly struck the deputy with his fists and resisted arrest.
During the confrontation, Graddy tried to gouge out the deputy’s eyes with his thumbs.
Deputy Dave Burney arrived as backup and tried to put Graddy in handcuffs, but the suspect struggled and resisted.
Both deputies used their tasers and were able to take Grady into custody.
The deputies found a gun loaded with one round on Graddy.
The suspect faces charges of Armed Robbery of a Person, two counts of Resisting arrest with violence, battery on a law enforcement officer, carrying a concealed firearm and a felon in possession of a firearm.
Deputy Moret was evaluated at a hospital and was released. Deputy Burney received abrasions, but was medically cleared at the scene.
