VALRICO, Fla. - A mobile home fire, a body found and a man wandering the streets have Hillsborough County Sheriff's investigators trying to piece together a mysterious death in Valrico.
It happened at the Oakhill Villages Mobile Home Park.
According to the investigators, someone called 9-1-1 just after midnight about a man wandering through the area, mumbling and carrying a hammer.
Deputies arrived to find a mobile home on fire.
When Hillsborough County Fire Rescue arrived, they learned someone could be trapped inside the home. They immediately went on the attack and gained entry. Inside, they found the body of a man.
After the discovery, deputies detained the man they originally came to check on.
Nancy Ball lives next door to fire. She told us she spoke to that man and replayed the conversation they had for us.
"He said, 'Will you take me to a mental hospital?' and I said, 'Sir, I can't take you to a mental hospital.' He was quiet and he said, 'Please take me to a mental hospital.' And I said, 'Sir I'm not taking you to a mental hospital.' and I said, 'I can call the police for you.' Oh no! Don't call the police," Ball recalled.
Nancy did call 911 and deputies have detained Frank Stanley Chapman.
Chapman has been charged with arson and murder.
As for the man found inside the mobile home, investigators will only say they believe Chapman and the victim had some kind of connection.
An autopsy is expected to be preformed Monday afternoon.
