TAMPA - Attorneys in the Christopher Hanney trial wrapped up their opening statements quickly Tuesday morning.  Both sides took a total of 40 minutes.

Hanney is accused of beating his wife, Audrey Mabrey, with a hammer, dousing her with gasoline and setting her on fire in their Apollo Beach home in November 2009.

Prosecutors called it "a monstrous and unimaginable crime."

Mabrey suffered burns on 80 percent of her body, but survived.

She was the prosecution's first witness on Tuesday.

Mabrey broke down in tears several times, once when she described being sexually assaulted and set on fire  and again when prosecutors displayed a photograph of her before the alleged attack.

Jurors were visibly upset when the state asked Mabrey to approach the panel and show then her extensive scarring.

Hanney's attorney made an unexpected announcement during opening statements, saying the defendant will take the stand in his own defense.

Hanney faces attempted murder charges, as well as charges of arson and aggravated battery.

The downtown Tampa trial is expected to last about a week.
